This is the grave of US Colonel Everett Peabody – Springfield Cemetery – Springfield, Massachusetts. Peabody, a civil engineer, was a graduate of Harvard University and would move to St. Joseph, Missouri to take a job with a railroad. With the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed major of the 13th Missouri (US) Infantry regiment. Promoted colonel of the regiment in September 1861, he would lead his regiment in the defense of Lexington, Missouri. Wounded and carried from the field, he would be captured with the rest of the garrison. After being exchanged he would recruit the 25th Missouri (US) Infantry regiment. Peabody would be ordered to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee in March 1862. There he would take command of the First Brigade of the Sixth Division. On the morning of April 6, the Confederates would attack near a small church – Shiloh Meeting House. His regiments would be credited with discovering the Confederate attack, giving the Federal army time to prepare for the heavy attacks. Peabody would be hit with three bullets before a fourth hit in the face, killing him instantly. For more information on Peabody, see my blog article, "Colonel Everett Peabody – Unsung Hero of Shiloh."
